Carrying a suitcase through Istanbul is not a badge of honour. The city has hills, stairs, busy tram platforms, and long airport transfers. If you have a long layover, an early check in, or a few hours between hotel bookings, luggage storage can turn a frustrating day into a manageable one.
This guide explains the practical options at Istanbul Airport, also called IST, and Sabiha Gökçen Airport, also called SAW. It also explains the detail that causes the most confusion: airport storage is not always available from every part of the terminal. Read the location carefully before you leave the baggage area or pass security.
Quick answer: where can you leave a bag?
At IST, the official iGA airport page lists staffed left luggage offices in the arrivals area next to the domestic passenger exit and opposite Exit 13. It also lists self service lockers near Gates 1 and 6 on the departures level. These are the two locations to look for first. Check the official Istanbul Airport left luggage page for the current map and tariff.
At SAW, the official airport page lists a Baggage Storage Office in the International Terminal on the international arrivals level. It says the service operates 24 hours and charges by bag size. See the official Sabiha Gökçen baggage deposit page before you travel.
- Just landed at IST: stay in the public arrivals area and follow signs for left luggage or Emanet Bagaj.
- At IST before check in: look for lockers near Gates 1 and 6 on the departures level.
- At SAW: go to the International Terminal arrivals level and ask for the Baggage Storage Office.
- Still airside in transit: do not assume the arrivals office is accessible. Ask an airport information desk about a post security option.
IST luggage storage: the locations that matter
Arrivals office near Exit 13
The most useful option for an incoming visitor is the staffed arrivals office. The official location is opposite Exit 13, close to the domestic passenger exit. You reach it after baggage collection, while you are still in the public side of the terminal. This is the sensible choice when you have arrived early, want to visit the city, and do not want to drag your suitcase onto the Havaist bus or metro.
Follow the terminal signs rather than relying only on a map pin. IST is large, and the exit number is more helpful than a business name. Keep the receipt or collection slip. Take a photo of it if you are worried about losing a small piece of paper, but do not post the details publicly.
Departure lockers near Gates 1 and 6
The same official iGA listing places lockers near Gates 1 and 6 on the departures level. These are useful if you are already at the airport early and want to move around with less hand luggage. They are not a reason to go through security earlier than your airline allows. Check the instructions on the locker and keep the access code somewhere safe.
There is an important difference between a public side service and an airside service. If you are connecting without entering Turkey, you may not be able to walk to the arrivals office. A passenger who stays inside the international transit zone should ask airport staff before leaving the secure area. Do not exit immigration just because a travel blog says a counter exists on another floor.
SAW luggage storage for the Asian side
Sabiha Gökçen is on the Asian side and is often more convenient for flights to or from Kadıköy, Üsküdar, the eastern suburbs, or destinations along the Anatolian side. The official airport information places its baggage storage office on the International Terminal arrivals level and says the service is open 24 hours.
The service is charged by size and is separate from your airline. Ask how the airport defines a small, cabin, or large bag before you hand it over. If you have a musical instrument, bicycle, child equipment, or an unusually large case, ask whether the office accepts it. A storage desk may have limits that are not obvious in a short online listing.
Do not confuse baggage storage with lost and found. If you are intentionally leaving a bag, ask for the baggage deposit service. If an airline lost your checked case, contact the airline and its baggage desk instead.
How much does airport luggage storage cost?
Airport storage is priced by bag and time, not by the number of people using the counter. A family with three small bags can therefore pay more than one traveller with a single large case. The final price can also depend on whether you use a staffed office, a locker, a public side area, or a service aimed at transit passengers.
The official iGA page currently displays a tariff labelled for 2025. It gives reference figures of 150 TL for a small bag, 200 TL for a medium bag, 400 TL for a large bag, 500 TL for an XL item, and 630 TL for an XXL item for 24 hours. Recent 2026 travel listings report higher examples of about 210 TL, 270 TL, 550 TL, 690 TL, and 860 TL by size. The conflict is exactly why you should treat online prices as planning references and confirm the amount at the counter.
For a rough currency comparison, 1 USD was about 45 TL in March 2026. That would make 450 TL about 10 USD at that dated reference rate. Your bank rate, the airport tariff, and the length of storage can all change the result.
Price note: All lira and dollar amounts in this article are dated reference figures, not a guarantee. Airport storage prices, taxes, payment methods, bag categories, and opening arrangements can change. Check the official airport page and ask for the total before you leave your bag.
Is storage worth it during a layover?
Use the airport desk when your time is tight
Airport storage costs more than leaving a suitcase at a hotel, but it saves a second transfer. It makes sense for a layover of roughly six to twelve hours when you want to spend time in the city and do not have a hotel room. Build in time to return to the airport, collect the bag, clear security, and reach your gate.
Our Istanbul layover guide explains how much sightseeing is realistic. Do not turn an eight hour connection into a race across three districts. A bag free visit to one area is better than missing your flight.
Use your hotel when you are checking in or out
Most hotels will hold a guest’s luggage before check in or after check out. Ask at reception and confirm the collection deadline. This is usually the cheapest option, and the bag stays close to your room. It is less useful if you are staying far from the airport or if you have a same day flight after checking out.
If you have booked an apartment, ask the host about storage before arrival. Never leave a bag in a hallway or outside a locked building because a message says the cleaner will collect it later.
Use a city drop off only when the route helps
Private luggage shops in Sultanahmet, Taksim, Karaköy, and Kadıköy can be useful if you are already visiting that district. They are not automatically better than the airport desk. Check reviews, opening hours, insurance terms, size limits, and the collection process. A cheap shop that closes before your evening ferry is not cheap if you need a second taxi.
Plan the airport transfer around the bag
If you store luggage at IST, decide whether you will travel by Havaist, metro, taxi, or a combination. Our Istanbul metro and Marmaray guide is helpful for comparing public transport connections. Our 24 hour Istanbul layover guide is better for a longer stop.
Use the March 2026 reference figures in your rough budget: a bus ride was 42 TL, a single use ticket was 60 TL, and Marmaray ranged from 34 TL to 75 TL depending on distance. These are not a promise of the fare today. The current tariff can be higher, so check Metro Istanbul before you travel.
A suitcase changes the calculation. A metro ride may be cheaper, but stairs and crowded platforms can make it exhausting. A taxi may be comfortable, but traffic can destroy a short layover. If you choose a taxi, use a marked vehicle, ask for the meter, and allow extra time. You can read our Istanbul taxi survival guide before you decide.
What to do at the storage desk
- Check that the office or locker is on the public side you can reach.
- Ask the staff to confirm the bag category and the charge period.
- Remove passports, medicine, cash, laptops, cameras, and fragile items.
- Keep the receipt, code, and collection instructions separate from the stored bag.
- Ask what happens if you collect the bag late or the airport closes an area temporarily.
- Photograph the outside of the bag and its tag before handing it over.
Do not put valuables in storage simply because the service has a counter. Airport staff handle thousands of bags, but no storage system replaces your own judgement. Keep your travel documents and medication with you.
When should you skip storage?
Skip airport storage if your connection is short, you need to change terminals, or you are travelling with a bag that may be refused. Skip a city drop off if collecting it requires crossing the entire city at rush hour. If you are landing late at night, confirm that your hotel or chosen storage shop will still be open.
Also skip a city trip if your connection leaves little room for delays. Immigration, airport security, traffic, and weather can all take longer than the optimistic version in a timetable. Istanbul is worth exploring, but your next flight is the part you cannot reschedule cheaply.
My practical recommendation
For an ordinary visitor landing at IST with a long layover, use the official arrivals office near Exit 13, keep the receipt, and stay in one central neighbourhood. For an early departure from IST, check whether the departure lockers near Gates 1 and 6 are available on the side of the terminal you can access. For SAW, start with the official International Terminal arrivals office. For a hotel stay, ask the hotel first because it is simpler and usually cheaper.
The real trick is not finding a place to put a suitcase. It is planning the day so that storage, transport, and airport security do not become three separate emergencies. Travel light when you can, check the live airport information, and leave more time than the map suggests.
