Istanbul Weather Month by Month: What to Pack and What to Expect

Istanbul's weather can change quickly.

Istanbul has four distinct seasons and genuinely variable weather within each one. The city sits at a crossroads of climates: warm air from the south, cold continental fronts from the north, and the Bosphorus moderating both. What this means in practice is that a day in April can be warm and sunny, or cold and rainy, sometimes both within the same afternoon. This guide gives you honest expectations for every month of the year and a packing list that actually works.

January and February: Cold, Damp, Occasionally Magical

January averages around 8 to 9°C but regularly dips to 2 to 4°C at night. Snow falls two to four times per winter, usually melting within a day or two. When snow settles on the minarets and the Bosphorus, Istanbul looks extraordinary. But it also paralyses traffic and makes cobblestone streets genuinely treacherous.

February is slightly warmer but still wet and grey for much of the month. Rain is frequent and wind off the Bosphorus is sharp, especially along the waterfront and on any elevated ground.

Pack: heavy coat, waterproof outer layer, warm layers underneath, proper boots rather than trainers. Do not underestimate how cold the wind feels near the water, even when the thermometer says 10 degrees.

The upside: tourist sites are quiet, hotels discount significantly, and you will have Topkapi Palace’s courtyards largely to yourself.

March and April: The Underrated Season

March starts cold and unpredictable, then the city begins to open up. By mid-March, temperatures climb to 12 to 15°C on good days. April is genuinely beautiful: 15 to 20°C, tulips in full bloom across the city’s parks (Istanbul’s Tulip Festival runs through most of April), and consistently more sunshine than the previous two months.

April is one of the best months to visit Istanbul. Crowds are building but have not yet peaked. The weather is pleasant without being hot. Outdoor cafes and rooftops open up. The parks turn green and the light on the Bosphorus in the late afternoon is exceptional.

Pack: light layers, one warm jacket for evenings that can still be cold, comfortable walking shoes, and an umbrella or packable rain jacket. April showers are real and can be heavy.

💡 Pro Tip: The Emirgan Park tulip display in April is one of the city’s best seasonal events. Go on a weekday and arrive before 10am. Weekend afternoons in tulip season bring crowds that make the park feel very small very quickly.

May: The Ideal Month

May is arguably the best month for visiting Istanbul. Temperatures sit between 18 and 24°C, sunshine is frequent, and crowds are present but manageable. Bosphorus ferry trips are comfortable. Evening dining outdoors is genuinely pleasant without being too warm or too cool.

Pack: light clothing, a layer for evenings, sunscreen, and comfortable shoes for long walking days. The heat is not yet oppressive, so covering a lot of ground on foot feels fine.

June, July, and August: Hot, Sunny, Crowded

Summer in Istanbul is warm to hot. June averages 25 to 28°C, while July and August regularly hit 30 to 35°C with significant humidity. There is almost no rain from late June to early September.

July and August are peak tourist season. Hagia Sophia, the Grand Bazaar, and Sultanahmet in general are at maximum capacity. Prices are at their highest. Outdoor walking in the midday heat is tiring and can be genuinely unpleasant on the hillier streets.

Pack: light cotton clothing, sunscreen SPF 50, a hat, sunglasses, and a reusable water bottle. Comfortable sandals are useful alongside walking shoes.

Summer strategy: start sightseeing by 8am before the heat and crowds build. Take a break from noon to 3pm. Resume in the late afternoon. The Bosphorus breeze makes waterfront areas noticeably cooler than inland streets during peak afternoon heat.

  • Rooftop bar season is in full swing through summer, though queues form at popular spots
  • Evening Bosphorus ferry trips are among the most pleasant things you can do in July
  • Sea temperatures reach 22 to 24°C by August if you want to swim at the Princes Islands
  • Check the calendar for Ramadan dates, which shift annually, as restaurant and cafe hours may vary

September and October: The Second Best Season

September remains warm, around 25 to 28°C in early month, dropping to 20 to 22°C by late September. October settles into the 15 to 20°C range, which is perfect walking weather. This is my personal preference for visiting Istanbul.

Crowds thin significantly after late August. September and October offer a balance that peak summer cannot: good weather, quieter sights, lower hotel rates, and a city that feels more like it belongs to the people who live there. The light in October is exceptional for photography.

Pack: light clothes for daytime, a jacket or cardigan for evenings, and a packable rain layer. October rain returns and can be persistent.

💡 Pro Tip: Autumn light in Istanbul, especially in October, is exceptional. The warm golden light hits the Bosphorus and the old city differently than summer haze does. If you care about photography at all, even casually, October light rewards you.

November and December: Quiet and Underrated

November brings rain and cooling temperatures, around 12 to 16°C. December drops to 8 to 12°C with regular overcast days and some rain. Snow is possible in December but not common, and when it falls it rarely stays longer than a day.

These months are quiet in the tourist sense. Major sites are lightly visited. Hotels discount heavily. The city is fully functional: Istanbul’s restaurants, music venues, cafes, and culture do not slow down at all. Locals are out. The city feels like itself.

Pack: warm layers, waterproof jacket, boots. A hat and gloves for December evenings near the water.

Month-by-Month Quick Reference

  • January to February: 5 to 9°C. Wet, quiet, possible snow. Pack warmly, expect grey days.
