Not every famous attraction in Istanbul deserves your limited time and money. Some are genuinely life-altering experiences. Others are overpriced or overhyped. After years of living here and visiting these places multiple times — with and without tourist crowds — here’s my honest ranking and review of Istanbul’s top 20 sights. I’ll tell you what each one costs, how much time to allow, and most importantly, whether it’s actually worth it.
The Must-Sees (Don’t Miss These)
1. Hagia Sophia
⚠️ Restoration note (2026): Hagia Sophia is undergoing a multi-year structural restoration. Significant interior areas may be covered with scaffolding during your visit. The site remains open and the entrance fee is unchanged.
Cost: €25 (tourist area) / Free (ground-floor mosque) | Time: 45–90 min
Honest take: Even after the price increase, Hagia Sophia remains the single most impressive building in Istanbul. The scale of the dome, the 1,500 years of layered history (church → mosque → museum → mosque), and the Byzantine mosaics in the upper gallery justify the cost. The ground-floor prayer area is free and still magnificent.
Verdict: ★★★★★ Essential.
2. Topkapı Palace + Harem
Cost: 2,750 TL combined | Time: 2.5–3 hours
Honest take: The Harem is extraordinary — the tiled chambers, the sense of claustrophobic intrigue, the stories of power and politics. The Treasury has the Spoonmaker’s Diamond and Topkapı Dagger. The Fourth Courtyard terrace view over the Bosphorus is stunning. The main palace rooms can feel empty (much was moved to Dolmabahçe). Still, unmissable.
Verdict: ★★★★★ Essential. Book online to skip the queue.
3. Süleymaniye Mosque
Cost: Free | Time: 45 min
Honest take: Many consider this more beautiful than the Blue Mosque, and I agree. Architect Sinan’s masterpiece has better proportions, more natural light, fewer tourists, and a tranquil courtyard with Golden Horn views. The garden tombs of Sultan Süleyman and Roxelana add emotional weight.
Verdict: ★★★★★ The most underrated major sight.
4. Grand Bazaar
Cost: Free | Time: 1–3 hours
Honest take: Is it touristy? Yes. Is it a genuine 550-year-old market that’s still the beating commercial heart of the old city? Also yes. Don’t come expecting bargains — come for the experience, the architecture, and the theater of commerce. Closed Sundays.
Verdict: ★★★★☆ Essential for the experience, even if you don’t buy.
5. Bosphorus Ferry Crossing
Cost: 35–59 TL | Time: 25 min (crossing) or 2–6 hours (cruise)
Honest take: The best value experience in Istanbul. A simple ferry crossing from Eminönü to Kadıköy (35 TL) gives you the Bosphorus, the skyline, the seagulls, and a glass of çay — for the price of a bus ticket. The short cruise (65–100 TL, 2 hours) or full cruise to Anadolu Kavağı (120–200 TL, 6 hours) are both excellent.
Verdict: ★★★★★ The best thing to do in Istanbul, period.
6. Basilica Cistern
Cost: 1,950 TL | Time: 30–45 min
Honest take: Atmospheric and genuinely impressive. The forest of 336 columns in the underground cistern, the mysterious Medusa heads, and the eerie lighting create a memorable experience. Steep price for a relatively short visit, but hard to replicate anywhere else.
Verdict: ★★★★☆ Worth it for the unique experience.
The Very Worthwhile
7. Blue Mosque (Sultanahmet Camii)
Cost: Free | Time: 20–30 min
Honest take: Iconic exterior, stunning İznik tile interior, and free entry. The interior is most beautiful in early morning light. Closed during prayer times. Overshadowed by Süleymaniye for me, but still essential for first-timers.
Verdict: ★★★★☆ Free and beautiful — no reason to skip.
8. Dolmabahçe Palace
Cost: 1,800 TL | Time: 90 min
Honest take: European-style opulence that’s completely different from Topkapı’s Ottoman look. The Crystal Staircase and 4.5-ton chandelier are jaw-dropping. The room where Atatürk died (clock stopped at 9:05 AM) is historically powerful. Closed Mondays.
Verdict: ★★★★☆ Different from Topkapı — see both if you have time.
9. Istanbul Archaeology Museums
Cost: €15 | Time: 1.5–2 hours
Honest take: Criminally undervisited. The Alexander Sarcophagus alone is worth the visit. The Treaty of Kadesh (world’s oldest peace treaty) is here. Three museums in one complex. A must for history lovers.
Verdict: ★★★★☆ Best museum value in Istanbul.
10. Kadıköy Market
Cost: Free | Time: 1–2 hours
Honest take: Where Istanbul actually shops for food. Fishmongers, olive vendors, cheese shops, spice stalls — it’s the Grand Bazaar minus the tourist markup plus 10x the authenticity. Combined with a Moda walk, it’s a perfect half-day.
Verdict: ★★★★☆ The real Istanbul food experience.
11. Balat and Fener Walk
Cost: Free | Time: 2–3 hours
Honest take: Istanbul’s most photogenic neighborhoods. Colored Ottoman houses, the Ecumenical Patriarchate, the Bulgarian Iron Church, and emerging artisan cafés. Best visited on foot with a camera.
Verdict: ★★★★☆ The best free walking experience.
12. Spice Bazaar (Mısır Çarşısı)
Cost: Free | Time: 30–60 min
Honest take: Smaller and more focused than the Grand Bazaar. Good for Turkish delight, spices, and teas. Prices are tourist-inflated — for better deals, duck into the streets behind the bazaar.
Verdict: ★★★☆☆ Quick, sensory, and convenient.
The Good (But Not Essential)
13. Galata Tower
Cost: €30 | Time: 30–45 min
Honest take: The 360-degree panoramic view is genuinely spectacular. But at €30, it’s one of the priciest towers in the world. Several nearby rooftop cafés offer nearly identical views for the price of a coffee. If you’re on a budget, skip the tower and find a rooftop.
Verdict: ★★★☆☆ Great views, debatable value.
14. Pera Museum
Cost: 300 TL | Time: 1 hour
Honest take: Small but perfectly curated. The famous “Tortoise Trainer” painting is here, alongside Orientalist art and Ottoman-era collections. A pleasant break from mosque-and-palace fatigue.
Verdict: ★★★☆☆ Nice for art lovers, skippable for others.
15. Çamlıca Mosque
Cost: Free | Time: 45 min
Honest take: Turkey’s largest mosque (completed 2019), with stunning city views from the Asian side hilltop. Architecturally impressive and virtually tourist-free. Worth combining with an Asian side day.
Verdict: ★★★☆☆ Impressive and uncrowded.
16. Eyüp Sultan Mosque + Pierre Loti
Cost: Free (mosque) + cable car fare | Time: 1.5–2 hours
Honest take: The mosque is one of Istanbul’s holiest sites, and the hillside cemetery is hauntingly beautiful. The Pierre Loti cable car and café offer a Golden Horn panorama. Feels removed from the tourist circuit in a good way.
Verdict: ★★★☆☆ Worth it for history and atmosphere seekers.
17. Istanbul Modern
Cost: Varies | Time: 1–2 hours
Honest take: The new Karaköy building is architecturally stunning. Exhibitions rotate. Good for contemporary art lovers but not essential for a short trip.
Verdict: ★★★☆☆ Art lovers should go; others can skip.
The Overpriced or Overrated
18. Maiden’s Tower (Kız Kulesi)
Cost: €27 | Time: 1 hour (including boat)
Honest take: A small island tower in the Bosphorus with a nice view. The interior is a restaurant/café. It photographs beautifully from the Üsküdar shoreline but the actual visit is underwhelming for the price. Better admired from afar.
Verdict: ★★☆☆☆ Better as a photo subject than a visit.
19. Miniaturk
Cost: ~300 TL | Time: 1–2 hours
Honest take: A park with miniature replicas of Turkish landmarks. Good for families with small children. Not worth the trip for adults without kids.
Verdict: ★★☆☆☆ Families with kids only.
20. Madame Tussauds Istanbul (Permanently Closed)
Cost: ~400 TL | Time: 1 hour
Update (2026): Madame Tussauds Istanbul permanently closed on December 31, 2024 along with LEGOLAND Discovery Centre and SEA LIFE Istanbul. The information below is preserved for historical reference. If you are looking for things to do on İstiklal, see our Beyoğlu and Galata guides instead.
Verdict: ★☆☆☆☆ Hard pass.
