Ear surgery is one of those procedures that most people don’t talk about openly, which means a lot of people quietly live with ears that bother them — prominent ears, asymmetrical shape, ears that stick out further than they’d like. Otoplasty, the medical term for ear reshaping surgery, is also one of Istanbul’s more accessible cosmetic procedures: shorter surgery time, fast recovery, no general anesthesia required for most patients, and a price that makes the UK and US equivalents look almost absurd.

Here’s what you need to know.

What Is Otoplasty?

Otoplasty is a surgical procedure that reshapes, repositions, or reduces the ears. The most common version is “ear pinning” — bringing prominent ears closer to the head. But it also covers:

– Reducing ear size (macrotia)
– Correcting asymmetry between ears
– Reconstructing ear shape after injury or congenital differences
– Correcting “lop ear” (top of ear folded downward)

It’s not just a cosmetic choice. For children who’ve been bullied over prominent ears, and for adults who’ve spent decades managing hairstyles around insecurity about their ears, the psychological impact of otoplasty is significant.

What the Surgery Involves

For standard ear pinning, the surgeon makes a small incision in the natural fold behind the ear (the groove where the ear meets the head). Through this incision, cartilage is reshaped, repositioned, or scored to create the desired contour. Sutures hold the new shape. The incision is hidden in the crease and becomes effectively invisible once healed.

Most adult otoplasties are performed under local anesthesia with sedation — you’re awake but relaxed and feel no pain. Children typically receive general anesthesia. The procedure takes 1–2 hours, and most patients go home the same day.

Both ears are almost always done in a single session to ensure symmetry.

Istanbul Prices vs. US and UK

Procedure Istanbul United States United Kingdom
Standard ear pinning (both ears) $1,700–$4,000 $4,000–$8,000 £2,500–£5,000
Single ear correction $1,400–$2,000 $2,500–$5,000 £1,500–£3,000
Ear reconstruction $1,600–$4,500 $10,000–$22,000+ £5,000–£15,000

All-inclusive packages in Istanbul (surgery + hotel + transfers) for standard ear pinning run $2,000–$4,000, with many falling in the $2,500–$3,200 range.

Savings versus the US: roughly 50–70%. Versus the UK: 40–60%.

💡 Pro Tip: The all-inclusive package model works especially well for otoplasty because the recovery is manageable (you can move around after a day or two), and a 4–5 day Istanbul trip covers the whole thing comfortably.

The Recovery Timeline

Otoplasty has a gentler recovery than most cosmetic surgeries, but there are real restrictions:

Day 1–2: A surgical dressing wraps around your head covering both ears. Some swelling and mild discomfort — managed with standard pain relief. You can walk around the hotel.

Day 3–7: Dressing is replaced with a lighter headband. Swelling and bruising are visible but improving. Most patients feel comfortable going out to eat, visiting a café, exploring gently. Ears feel tender when touched.

Week 2–4: Headband worn at night to protect ear position while it heals. You return home during this period. Avoid contact sports, swimming, and anything that might bend the ear.

6 weeks+: Full activity resumes. The cartilage settles into its new position. Residual mild swelling fully resolves over 3–6 months.

Visible results: Immediate — the ears are in their new position from day one. What you see post-op (accounting for swelling) is roughly what you get.

Risks to Know About

Otoplasty is considered a relatively low-risk procedure, but it’s still surgery:

Asymmetry is the most common complaint — one ear may not settle identically to the other. Minor asymmetry is common; significant asymmetry may require revision.
Over-correction (ears pinned too close) creates a different but equally noticeable appearance. Choose a surgeon who aims for a natural result, not the maximum correction possible.
Suture problems — in rare cases, internal sutures become visible or palpable under the skin.
Infection — managed with antibiotics; rare at accredited facilities.
Keloid scarring — people with a history of keloid scars should discuss this risk before surgery.

Choosing a Surgeon in Istanbul

Otoplasty is a surgical skill — results vary significantly between surgeons. Look for:

– Plastic surgeons (not just “aesthetic clinics”) with board certification from the Turkish Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery Society (TPRECD)
– Before/after galleries specific to otoplasty (not general plastic surgery)
– Surgeons who will do a proper consultation before any commitment
– JCI-accredited hospital affiliations for the surgical procedure itself

Avoid any clinic that seems to be rushing you through a conveyor belt of appointments.
