Istanbul has become one of the world’s most popular destinations for breast augmentation. Tens of thousands of patients — predominantly from the UK, Western Europe, and Gulf countries — make the trip each year. The price difference versus home is significant, the clinics serving international patients have developed slick, well-organized systems, and results from quality providers are genuinely competitive with what you’d receive in the UK or US.
This guide covers what the surgery actually involves, what it costs, what the recovery looks like, and how to choose the right clinic and implant for you.
Types of Breast Surgery Available in Istanbul
Breast augmentation (implants) is the most common procedure. Silicone implants are placed either behind the breast tissue (subglandular) or behind the pectoral muscle (submuscular). Round or anatomical (teardrop) shapes, smooth or textured surfaces — there are real choices that affect both appearance and long-term feel.
Breast lift (mastopexy) removes excess skin and reshapes the breast tissue to lift drooping breasts. No implant involved. Often preferred after weight loss or post-pregnancy.
Combined augmentation + lift is the most complex single-session breast surgery, adding volume while repositioning the breast. Recovery is longer but patients avoid two separate trips.
Fat transfer breast augmentation uses liposuction from one area (abdomen, thighs) and injects the purified fat into the breasts. Natural feel, no implant risks, but results are subtler (typically 0.5–1 cup size increase) and some fat reabsorbs.

Implant Choices: What Actually Matters
Shape: Round implants give more fullness in the upper pole (that “full” look). Anatomical/teardrop implants follow the natural breast slope — more subtle, often preferred for women with some existing tissue. Both are valid; it’s an aesthetic preference combined with your anatomy.
Profile: Low, moderate, high, ultra-high. Determines how far the implant projects forward relative to its width. Important for matching your frame.
Size: Measured in cc (cubic centimeters), not cup size. Cup sizes vary by bra brand. Work in cc with your surgeon and use sizers/3D imaging to visualize the result.
Surface: Smooth implants have lower capsular contracture risk in recent data. Textured implants were popular for stability but some textured types have been linked (in rare cases) to a lymphoma (BIA-ALCL). High-profile brands like Motiva (smooth) and Mentor are commonly used in Istanbul.
💡 Pro Tip: Ask specifically which implant brand your surgeon uses and request documentation. Reputable Istanbul surgeons work with Motiva, Allergan (Natrelle), Mentor, or Sientra-equivalent CE-certified brands. Avoid any surgeon who is vague about implant provenance.
Recovery: What to Expect
Day 1 (surgery day): You wake up in the hospital. Tightness, pressure, and soreness in the chest. Pain is managed with medication — it’s uncomfortable rather than severe for most patients.
Days 2–5: You’re in the hotel. Moving carefully. Supported by a surgical bra. Taking prescribed medications. You can walk around, eat, watch Netflix. Showering is possible after the first day or two with care.
Days 5–10: Most international patients fly home in this window. Swelling is present but you’re functional. Arms are limited in reach — nothing above shoulder height for 2 weeks.
Weeks 2–6: Progressive recovery. Swelling reduces. The “implant drop and fluff” process begins — implants sitting high initially will settle into their final position over 3–6 months.
Final result: 3–6 months. The implants soften, settle, and look most natural at this point.
What to avoid: Heavy lifting, sports, underwire bras (usually for 6–8 weeks), swimming (until wounds are fully healed).
Risks to Take Seriously
– Capsular contracture — scar tissue forming around the implant, causing hardness. Risk varies by patient and technique; managed with implant massage and, if severe, surgical revision.
– Implant rupture — modern implants are durable but not permanent. Average lifespan 10–20 years. Silicone ruptures are “silent” (no collapse in shape); saline ruptures are obvious.
– Asymmetry — breasts are never perfectly identical before surgery; this continues after.
– BIA-ALCL — very rare lymphoma associated specifically with certain textured implants (not smooth). Discuss with your surgeon.
– Infection — managed with antibiotics; rare at quality facilities.
– Sensory changes — temporary or, in rare cases, permanent change in nipple sensation.
Choosing a Clinic
Look for:
– JCI-accredited hospital for the surgical procedure (Acıbadem, Memorial, Medipol, and others in Istanbul have JCI accreditation)
– Surgeon who is a member of ISAPS (International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery)
– Written quote including implant brand and model number
– 3D imaging or sizer session to plan size
– Clear explanation of what happens if you need revision work after returning home
